Professional hairstylists style hair by carefully controlling the speed and tension of the iron’s movements to minimize damage.
ReFa’s unique “Carbon Layer Plates” are a technology that recreates the professional hairstylists’ damage-reducing techniques.
The three-layer structure consisting of high-density carbon, a heater,
and a low-rebound coating is designed to deliver heat gently and evenly.
This prevents cuticle damage caused by the sudden “water vapor explosions”1 that arise when heat is applied to damp hair.
In addition, the low-rebound coating gently envelops your hair,
keeping its three-dimensional structure intact without crushing it at all.
The result is that the iron gives you beautifully straight hair while preventing damage through precise control of water, heat, and pressure.

  • 1. An explosive phenomenon that arises when water vaporizes as a result of coming into contact with an extremely hot material.
  • 2. The test used untreated hair (hair that had never been colored, permed, or chemically processed) that had been sprayed with water.
    A ReFa STRAIGHT IRON PRO+ with no Carbon Layer Plates was used, and so was one that had them.
    In each case, using the iron at a setting of 180°C for two seconds five times was defined as one set.
    It was used for a total of 10 sets (equivalent to 10 days), then the hair surface was imaged using a scanning electron microscope.

In each case, the iron was used on the hair 300 times (equivalent to one month) at a setting of 180°C. The hair surface was then imaged using a scanning electron microscope.

Both the left and right plates are now equipped not only with a temperature monitoring sensor, but also with a controller that controls the movement of the heater. This controls the temperature difference between the two plates more precisely in real time. The sensors detect various irregularities—like heat being lost when the iron is clamped around the hair and heat not reaching the ends of the plates—then the controllers accurately correct them. Since even heat gets delivered stably, no more uneven finishes from temperature fluctuations. Now, anyone can get their hair beautifully straight from roots to ends with ease.

The clamping section has been engineered with a gap that distributes pressure evenly from the handle to the tip. What’s more, the plates themselves have been made thicker and changed to a suspension structure. This delivers a satisfying fit and more comfortable styling. Since the pressure gets applied evenly, hair is pressed evenly from roots to ends.

  • 1. Test Method: Artificially damaged hair was moisture-conditioned for over 24 hours in an environment with a temperature of 20°C and humidity of 65%. It was then treated with a single application consisting three strokes, each lasting 5 seconds with a ReFa STRAIGHT IRON PRO+ set to 180°C. This was performed on it once. The moisture content relative to the dry weight of the hair was calculated based on our own evaluation criteria.

  • 2. Test Method: Conducted in an environment with a temperature of 24 ± 1°C and humidity of 70 ± 5%. Bundles of artificially damaged hair were treated with a ReFa STRAIGHT IRON PRO+ set at 180°C by giving them one stroke lasting 2 seconds. This procedure was performed three times, then photographs were taken immediately after use and after the hair bundles had been left for 12 hours. The changes in the area of the hair bundles were then calculated.

  • 3. Test Overview: The test was conducted in an environment maintained at 20 ± 5°C and 50 ± 5% humidity. Hair bundles were bleached once and then dyed with a coloring agent. These bundles were treated either with a ReFa CURL IRON PRO+ without Carbon Layer Plates or with one equipped with them. In each case, using the iron at 180°C for five seconds, repeated three times, was defined as one set. The process was repeated for a total of 15 sets (equivalent to two weeks), after which the hair surface was photographed.

  • 4. Test Method: The test used hair bundles that had been washed in an environment with a temperature of 23 ± 1°C and humidity of 70 ± 5%, then dried for five minutes using a hair dryer. The hair bundles were passed through a ReFa STRAIGHT IRON PRO+ set to 180°C from end to end for five seconds. This was defined as one set, and was repeated for a total of five sets. Before and after the hair iron treatment, the hair bundles were wrapped around a cylinder, then photographed under lighting to observe changes.
